Krishnagiri Estate

Krishna Giri sits high in the Baba Budan Giri ranges of Chikmagalur, at about 1,500 metres. These are the hills where, by local account, the Sufi saint Baba Budan planted seven smuggled coffee seeds in the seventeenth century and began coffee growing in India. The estate has been worked since 1885 and is now in its fourth generation, run by Himakirthi and Karunya Gowda. At this height the cherries ripen slowly, which builds density and depth in the bean. The farm grows SLN 795 and Chandragiri Arabica under native shade and processes them as natural, honey and washed lots. The surrounding forest is part of a recognised biodiversity hotspot, and the estate is farmed to sit within that landscape rather than against it.

Ratnagiri Estate

Established in 1927 by Patre K. Shivappaiya, Ratnagiri Estate sits within the biodiverse hills of the Western Ghats, bordering a protected tiger reserve. The name meaning “Pearl Mountains” speaks to the silver-hued canopy of native silver oak that shades its Arabica crops alongside pepper, areca nut, and endemic flora. The estate is Rainforest Alliance certified.

Now in its third generation, Ratnagiri is led by Mr. Ashok Patre, one of the most recognised figures in Indian specialty coffee. Since 2015, the estate has shifted almost entirely toward high-end specialty production, with a focus on experimental processing, micro-lots, and rigorous traceability work that has placed Indian coffee on the radar of roasters across the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, and the Middle East.

Ratnagiri is where tradition and innovation meet. Scientific rigour, hands-on farming, and a genuine commitment to pushing what Indian terroir can express make this one of the country’s benchmark estates.

Melkodige Estate

Located 4000ft above sea level, Melkodige Estate is nestled in the serene mountain ranges of the Kudremukh bio reserve in the Western Ghats, one of the top ten biodiversity hot spots in the world. At this elevation, the Arabica coffee beans mature slower and this leisurely, careful maturation of our coffee beans produces the wonderful flavours that connoisseurs love.

At present, this ecofriendly plantation producing top quality pure coffee is scientifically run by horticulturist couple Aveen and Yogitha.Rodrigues. At Melkodige Estate, exclusive heirloom varieties like Sln 9, Sln 795, Sln 6 and Sln 5 are grown in addition to a collection of dwarf varieties like Chandragiri, HDT, Catuei and Obata.

Different processes are followed to produce fermented washed coffee, anaerobic fermented coffee, aerobic fermented coffee, yeast fermented coffee , pulp sun-dried coffee and every lot is Q-graded by professionals.As producers of specialty coffee, they believe that “the experience of a great cup of coffee is like sipping on a rainbow- it can stir up our senses, rejuvenate our bodies, lift our spirits and warm our hearts . The secret is in the tiny coffee bean.”

Amruthavarshini Estate

Perched at 3,700–4,000 feet in the highlands of Aldur, Amruthavarshini Estate is one of India’s few women-led specialty coffee farms. Named after the Carnatic raga symbolising rain and nourishment, the estate is managed by mother-daughter duo Poornima and Tanya Jairaj, bringing together backgrounds in banking, venture capital, sustainability, and social development.

Shade-grown Arabica and Robusta thrive within a rich agroforestry system alongside mango, jackfruit, pomelo, teak, and rosewood. Solar-powered infrastructure, eco-friendly processing, and dairy-based composting underpin a genuinely regenerative approach to farming.

Karadykan Estate – Chikmagalur, Karnataka

Nestled in the Baba Budan Giri hills of Chikmagalur at 1,200–1,400 MASL, Karadykan Estate spans 320 hectares across terrain locally known as “Trishul” a reference to the three hills that frame it. Fed by natural springs and receiving close to 100 inches of annual rainfall, the estate sits within a rich ecosystem shared with Indian gaurs, spotted deer, and native pepper and areca nut.

Originally established in the early 1900s, Karadykan is today managed by third-generation planters Mr. S. Appadurai and Mrs. Hamsini Appadurai under the Sangameshwar Coffee Estates umbrella, a name synonymous with pioneering Indian specialty coffee. The estate grows a diverse range of Arabica, Canephora, and Liberica varieties, with selective cherry picking and lot-wise separation at the core of their quality practice.
